I Refuse to Understand (NFL Ed.)

I Refuse to Understand (NFL Ed.)

Apr 27, 2012

You can call me a regular guy who will never understand being a young man, who just so happens to be a professional athlete.  You can say that I’m some guy who is jealous of professional athletes and all of which they are afforded because of their gifts and hard work (you’d be wrong, but you could say that).

You could even say, I’m just another in the long line of individuals that finds negative stuff online about people–and proceeds to blog about it as some expert, because my life is insignificant.  In other words, you could label me a hater.  Also, wrong, but you could label me as such.  And I’m sure there are more than a couple individuals that would read what I’m about to say and refer to me in such a way.

But you couldn’t be further from the truth.  I’m a realist that refuses to understand how someone, anyone, who gets paid for something they have done since they were children…and gets paid handsomely, would continue to jeopardize that very livelihood.

Brandon Meriweather, you just signed a 2-year $6M contract with the Redskins last month as a free agent.  With your sheer talent alone, I like the odds that you would probably be guaranteed to win the starting job at SS for the upcoming season.  Explain to me how you got pulled over on I-66 two days ago on suspicion of a DWI.  You haven’t even played a down in Washington, and you have already found a way to get to one of our many fine entertainment establishments, party and then drive home under the influence.

How does one fix their brains to do something that damn stupid?  You haven’t even made a play to have an apologist stand up and say, “Hey, we all make mistakes, cut the kid some slack.”  We don’t even know your damn number yet and you are acting out.  Now, before I get too far off-base, Brandon, this isn’t all about you.  Although, seeing as I am a die hard Redskins fan you definitely were the catalyst for this posting.  Let’s just look at a few of the dumb ass “mistakes” made of LATE by NFL players.

Lions DT Nick Fairley is arrested for marijuana possession.
Detroit Lions Running Back Mikel Leshoure doesn’t show up for arraignment on Marijuana charge.

WTH is going on up in Detroit, sh!t.

Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno is arrested for DUI.
49ers LB Aldon Smith is arrested for DUI.
Jaguars DT Nate Collins is arrested for possession of marijuana.

And for shits and giggles:

Bears WR Sam Hurd is arrested on federal drug charges.
^ this bastard here wanted to be Scarface, smh

Patriots receiver Julian Edelman is arrested for indecent assault and battery.
^ Okay wait, WTF is indecent assault?  No seriously?

Hell I guess the real question should be, what is the deal with marijuana and NFL players.  Got damn!  In my mind, there should never be a situation where you are driving to the club, knowing you are going to party…and then you decide you’re going to drive home.  DISREGARD THE FACT THAT IT’S JUST DANGEROUS AS HELL TO DRINK AND DRIVE… but you are almost always going to get caught (if you’re a professional athlete).  The same with the mary jane.  Why don’t you have a supplier that comes to you or a flunky to bring the greenery to you.  Where’s your middle man?  I don’t… I mean I can’t…

College players have hurt their draft stock, because of alcohol, weed, more than 1-2-3 baby mommas.  NFL players have killed the potential for lucrative deals, because of the types of things that they themselves can control.  Seriously, there are enough pitfalls and evils that materialize on their own, because of the celebrity that comes with being a professional athlete.  Why invent more? When you start throwing in variables that you can control, that negatively impact your draft position… that hurts your pockets, point blank period.  You don’t have to be a Rhodes Scholar to get that.  This is 1+1=2 math.

Here’s our most recent, DUDE WTF case.  Janoris Jenkins, whose on the field exploits alone make him the #2 cover corner in this years draft.  Some may even venture to say his cover ability is on par with or better than Morris Claiborne (this year’s #6 pick in the first round, DAL).  But because of COUNTLESS run-ins with the law at the University of Florida (resisting arrest and weed, to name a few), he was kicked out of school.  Got a second chance at North Alabama, where he balled out, but got popped for smoking and swinging on a teammate.  PLUS, he has 4 kids w/3 different women.  DUDE!!!  WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?

And somehow some way, there are rumors that teams are still looking to draft him in the 2nd round tonight.  I think this is nothing short of a PR nightmare.  He’s Antonio Cromartie 2.0.  Hopefully he won’t try to catch ‘Tonio in the baby-making department (10 kids w/8 different women– w/twins set to be born later this year, bringing his total to 12 chirren), but hell he’s off to a nice start.  At least with AC, he only really has had a problem with not strapping up before groupie hopping.  Jenkins on the other hand continues to show that he’s a ball of bad decisions.  But somehow because of his talent, he’ll be afforded an opportunity to make a living.  Doing something he has been blessed with the ability to do.  Something that he loves.

But does he love it enough to finally, GET IT?

I don’t like his odds, but I would LOVE to be proven wrong.

  1. Update: Janoris Jenkins was drafted in the 2nd Round, pick 39 by the Rams.

Please don’t misunderstand what I’m saying here people. I really do want the best for these young men. At the same time though, I’m a man that isn’t for non-stop excuses everytime someone makes a mistake. After a while it’s a pattern that needs to be addressed.
